American Finnish Club (AFC) – Kerhotalo or Kenttähaali as the Finns call it – is the oldest Finnish hall in Florida. It is a good example of what team work can accomplish. Decades ago the members of Kerhotalo, who were all Finnish immigrants, decided unanimously to build a hall by themselves, trusting only their own skills and strength. They were committed to their common goal and eager to make every effort to get the work done. This is called ‘suomalainen sisu’, Finnish guts.
The first festivities were held April 7th, 1946. Since then the clubhouse has been a center for many different activities. There has been practized choral singing, dance and gymnastics, played card games and bingo, showed theater performances and movies.
The hall was and is still truly a second home to many members.
